13 April Digging Into The Past

Monday · 8.00pm

One-off Partnership Evening with the Stebbing Local History Society

Join us for a special evening exploring the rich and layered history of St Mary’s, Stebbing, in partnership with the Stebbing Local History Society.
Unearthing the Past: Archaeology Beneath the Floor
Thanks to a recent grant supporting the restoration and historical interpretation of St Mary’s, we have been able to completely renew the church floor using sustainable methods. Before this work could begin, however, the old floor had to be carefully lifted and excavated.
These investigations revealed traces of the many lives, changes, and moments the building has witnessed—stories that had rested beneath the bricks for centuries. Additional archaeological work was also required outside to install the new heating system.
An archaeologist from the Colchester Archaeological Trust, directly involved in the 2024 excavations, will share insights into the discoveries made during this remarkable project.
Marks in the Margins: Medieval Church Graffiti
The walls of St Mary’s have quietly recorded the presence of generations—worshippers, wanderers, idlers, and iconoclasts alike. Some left deliberate marks; others doodled without thought. These inscriptions, both meaningful and mundane, offer glimpses into the personalities of Stebbing’s past.
Our second talk will introduce the world of medieval church graffiti, highlighting examples found at St Mary’s and comparing them with marks recorded in churches across the country. Attendees will be encouraged to explore the building and discover these carvings for themselves.
Refreshments & Reopening
Between the two talks, there will be an opportunity to enjoy tea, coffee, and cakes, and to browse the newly re-opened church, seeing the results of the restoration up close.
